May Athletes of the Month!

We are extremely proud and excited to announce our first Athlete(s) of the month. It was extremely hard to chose from our great community or members, as you all work very hard. We decided that instead of one athlete, that we would place 3 in the spotlight for the month of May! These 3 were with out a doubt very prominent in all of the coaches minds. Ashley, Susi, and Riley are regulars here in CFR and it is easy to see them pushing to find their limits every week. Whether coming in early to work on extra skills, staying after class to continue mobility and strength work, or pushing to try new movements they’re unfamiliar with. We believe these three athletes are great examples of what we strive for here at CrossFit Restart!

  •  I’m an Iowa native who moved back a few years ago after living in San Francisco for 9 years. I’m married, and we have a daughter who loves coming to the gym.  I like to run, and have a goal of running at least one half marathon each year of my 30’s. I believe in the healing power of music and try to dance/sing a little bit every day, although I do neither one well.

What made you start CrossFit/Fit Factory?

  • I struggled to stay active when I moved back from San Francisco, where I was used to walking at least 3 miles every day and running year round. I came across CrossFit Restart randomly, and then saw it was right down the street. I chose to do Fit Factory because I was used to doing more cardio and body weight movements.

What were your thoughts after your 1st WOD/Workout?

  • I was really frustrated with where I was, fitness-wise. I was doing pushups on the box the first day, and was actually kind of embarrassed about it. I knew that I had been stronger. I knew that I had been faster. But that just wasn’t where I was at anymore. I also knew immediately that I wanted to come back.

What do you most enjoy about CrossFit/Fit Factory?

  • I would not keep coming back if it wasn’t for the people. I actually did try CrossFit before and I did not get the same familial vibe that I get here. My days are always better when I get my morning workout in.

Proudest moment here at CrossFit Restart?

  • The first day of the CrossFit Open, I missed the morning class and came to the evening class. I was the only Fit Factory person there, so I was given the option to do the Open workout. I thought I was going to be able to scale it so I agreed, but ended up doing the Rx (not entirely my own decision!). Although I was pretty sure that I was going to die, I finished the workout, which felt pretty great. More than that, I realized that I had been coasting for a while. Since then, I’ve made a more conscious effort to challenge myself with heavier weights, and have surprised myself with what I’ve been able to do.

What is your MOST favorite movement or lift?

  • Kettlebell swings

What is your LEAST favorite movement or lift?

  • Wall climbs (is that what they’re called?) Anything that requires holding up all your body weight is rough, but this one is particularly brutal.

What are your CF/FF goals?….Have you or how close are you to reaching those goals?

  • I want to be able to do a pull-up. Just one…

What advice do you have for others new to CF/FF or those thinking of giving it a try?

  • You don’t know what you’re capable of until you try. Whether it’s a heavier weight, a new movement, or a higher box, try it. If it doesn’t work, you can always scale down or modify in a way that works for you.

What is your diet like? How has it changed since starting at CrossFit Restart?

  • Ummm….no comment 🙂  The quality of my diet hinges on whether or not I have my daily avocado, so it’s suffered a bit since moving back to Iowa. I try to focus on eating foods that make me feel good, more so than avoiding foods that make me feel terrible. But…I also really like french fries and ice cream…

Tell us about yourself (family, job, military, interests…)

  • I was born and raised in East Germany. I met my husband Greg during my exchange student year in Louisiana. We went through college together and started work life and family soon after. I am a certified elementary school teacher although I haven’t worked the last 5 years. My time and attention has been focused on my own 4 children; Emily 9, Thomas 6, Eli 4, and Lena 1. We enjoy the outdoors and pretty much anything that goes with that, camping, playing, fishing, boating, gardening, traveling, etc.

What made you start CrossFit/Fit Factory?

  • Growing up I did a couple of years of swimming and modern dance, but I never had much of a disciplined workout routine. I’ve always been active in a leisure sense but that wasn’t enough to keep me from packing on the pounds and becoming less fit with each pregnancy. After a meniscus tear in my right knee playing kickball with the family at Thanksgiving last year, which probably wouldn’t have happened if I had been in better shape, and my husband’s encouragement to try CrossFit, I jumped right in. I knew it was time to take better care of my body.

What were your thoughts after your 1st WOD/Workout?

  • My first WOD was “Annie” back in January of this year. I distinctly remember it because it took me forever to get through the sit-ups. We’re talking one rep at a time once I hit 30 reps. I was shocked of just how weak I had gotten over the 10 “baby-having” years. I felt sorry for the coach that was there that day who “suffered” through those 29min. with me; and of course I was the only one there that day. However, as embarrassing as that was, I enjoyed it. It felt good. And I felt motivated to come back for more.

What do you most enjoy about CrossFit/Fit Factory?

  • CrossFit is different every single day. I never do the same workout two days in a row. That’s exactly what I need to keep me interested and motivated to come back every day. It’s kind of like a surprise each day, unless you’re like my husband and check the workout beforehand. I enjoy the variety of movements and equipment we use that target every muscle of my body every single week. I tried going to the gym before, but didn’t have the time or knowledge to put together a good workout routine. So I wasted money and time. With CrossFit, I basically have a personal trainer who puts together an awesome routine which I can scale to my fitness level. Add to that the personal feedback from the coaches during the workout and cheering of my fellow cross fitters to finish, and I can’t think of a better way to get fit than CrossFit.

  • Remember that “Annie” WOD I struggled through with over 29min; I cut that time to under 10min. the last time we did that one. I still can’t do double unders, but at least I don’t have to break my sit-ups into singles anymore. That’s progress and motivation all wrapped up in one.

What is your MOST favorite movement or lift?

  • Rowing

What is your LEAST favorite movement or lift?

  • Running

What are your CF/FF goals?….Have you or how close are you to reaching those goals?

  • I want to achieve an overall fitness level that allows me to move and play with my kids without fear of injury or getting easily tired.  I want to be able to outlast me kids J! Oh and push-ups. I’ve never done a true push up in my life. If I could do a few real push-ups by next year that would be a huge accomplishment.

What advice do you have for others new to CF/FF or those thinking of giving it a try?

  • You will be amazed how quickly you can see and feel results. Scaling or modifying the workout to your level of fitness allows you to do all the workouts the long-timers do, building a sense of community and support as you tackle the workouts together.

What is your diet like? How has it changed since starting at CrossFit Restart?

  • I do not follow a specific type of diet. I like to cook and eat foods from all over the word. I would never be able to put my diet in a box and limit myself. However as a family we eat lots of wild game, fish, fresh veggies and fruit. I personally only drink lots and lots of water and coffee with milk. We cook from scratch every day and limit processed foods and eating out to special occasions. Since I started working out I’ve reduced some of my calorie intake, because as you know less weight will get me to my push up goal faster.
